School and Study Tips

The Tips

  • Take notes.  It helps to retain information, and to keep the mind on the subject at hand (and not on a beach somewhere).

  • Consider using a tape or digital recorder.  In most classes, I find note taking to be adequate.  However, there was one class where the professor covered so much detailed information through stories that I couldn't adequately capture the details that were required for the exams.  After only studying my notes and doing poorly on my first exam, I found that recording lectures and replaying them multiple times was the key to success in that class.

  • Stay organized.  Keep a pocket calendar or some other device with all of the homework due dates, exam dates, etc.  Write down every homework assignment.  Then check your calendar every day to make sure that no assignment or test surprises you.

  • Never shoot for "good enough", always shoot for an A+.  And even if you think you're going to get an A+, still remember to maximize your credits in case you're calculations turn out to be faulty or your assumptions fail to pan out.

  • Regurgitate when necessary.  Besides protestations to the contrary, some teachers will not give credit for a good answer unless it's their answer regurgitated.

  • Buy optional materials, including study guides.  Use them.  They often have extra examples, and explain the material in a different way.

  • Get adequate sleep when at all possible.  Without sleep, you won’t think as clearly as you could.
